The Architect's House

Private house built in 2004 by eco-minded architect Elias Messinas, in a 1000 sq meter land of pistachio, olive, fig and almond trees. Organized in two levels, the house has views to the sea and pistachio trees around it.

The house is in terms of aesthetics and construction of high quality. Regarding its ecological aspects, it is insulated throughout resulting in a 30% reduction in heating costs. Its orientation allows for summer breezes to ventilate and cool the house, and with the help of two ceiling fans the house has no need of air-conditioning.

The house has been widely published in Greece and abroad and featured in the 10th Biennale catalogue, the BBC World News, and Greek EcoNews (SKAI TV).

The house collects rain water and stores it in an underground cistern thus conserving on water resources – and offering the much-needed (non-potable) water in times when the island’s supply dwindles (or stops). Organic waste is composted in the garden’s compost bins, and the household waste is recycled.

The upper floor of approx. 50 square meters is surrounded by wide pergola-covered verandas. On the NW one views the sea and the beautiful mansion of Saliarelis among pine trees and pistachio and olive trees. Both verandas are fully equipped with comfortable chairs and dining facilities.

On the upper ground level there is a spacious living room and modern kitchen, separated by wooden shades for privacy. The kitchen is fully equipped with latest technology facilities cutlery and pottery. Cooking in this aesthetic and functional kitchen is a pleasure. The kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator, a dish-washer, stove, oven, hood and a toaster. A WC is located on this level.

A flight of wide and comfortable wooden stairs leads to the lower level, which is also brightly lit due to the side courts and large windows. On this level one finds 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and a spacious living area with a tv set and dvd player. The master bedroom has a double bed and wall-to-wall closets and a private fully equipped bathroom. The children’s room has a bank bed and a playing area and a small changing board and drawer furniture. The other bedroom can sleep one person on an opening sofa. The entire lower level is covered in honey-color oak parquet floor, making barefoot walking a pleasure. The house would be ideal for a family of 4 and one visitor – two visitors could also be accommodated.

The house is located in Plakakia, a quiet residential area 15 minutes walk from the port of Aegina and only 7 minutes walk from a bay with a lighthouse (Bouzas’) and two beaches. This bay is called by the locals “swimming pool” due to its calm and crystal clear waters. The street has kept the traditional stonewall fences, pistachio and olive trees and a quaint vernacular look. By the lighthouse is a small stonewalled church with a nice yard where kids gather to play and adults come to enjoy a nice view to the sea. The house enjoys proximity to a family hotel with a large swimming pool and tennis courts, that one can enjoy for a small charge. An organized beach called Kolona, after the ancient Apollo’s temple surviving column is a 10 minute walk away from the house.  Other sites of interest that can be reached by foot from the architect’s house is the Archaeological Museum of Aegina, the Kapralos Museum with sculptures and paintings and cultural events during the summer,

Moralis’ house and studio, architectural marvels such as Saliarelis’ (previous Zaimis) mansion, Yiannoulis mansion, houses by Greek-renown architect Aris Constantinides, and amenities such as children’s playground, bakery, mini-market, and many shops and tavernas.
